When moving to Fort Worth some 58 years ago, I assumed that the small town of White Settlement just to the west was probably named after a family named White.

A while back there were some efforts to change the name because, it turns out, it was named White not after a person but because only white folks were allowed to settle there.

Recently, some city leaders suggested that the name be changed to reflect a more positive attitude. They felt the name was inappropriate and a hindrance to growth and progress. However, it seems that the majority of the people disagreed and the name stayed the same.

After reading a June 15 letter by White Settlement resident Nolan Fontenot   (See: "Litter, in Spanish), it appears they did the right thing by not changing the name. It seems that some of White Settlement folks haven’t changed that much after all.

How rude of me. Please, come to my home   (VA LOAN) and allow me to show you my Honorable Discharge along with my Military record. Perhaps you can bring your Military and public service records with to show me which jail you served in   (many I am sure). Oh what fun we shall have. Do not forget to bring with you any money you may owe me and my family...... I look forward to our future face to face chat... anytime

whatever... I served. check you facts, most those in the military who fight and lose their lives are E-1. Never spent the night in any brig and am fully "HONORABLY DISCHARGED", my home was purchased trhough the VA loan program, the Army does hand those out to misfits or falures. Just pay your child support and take a bath............

    History Lesson for Nolan Fontenot.

Moses Austin   (October 4, 1761 – June 10, 1821) was a leading figure in the development of the American lead industry and the father of Stephen F. Austin, a pioneer settler of Texas. He was the first to obtain permission for Anglo Americans to settle in Spanish Texas. He also established the first Anglo-American settlement west of the Mississippi River.

Stephen Fuller Austin   (November 3, 1793 – December 27, 1836), known as the "Father of Texas", led the second and ultimately successful colonization of the region by settlers from the United States. He made his home in Hempstead County, Arkansas.

During Austin's time in Arkansas, his father had traveled to Spanish Texas and received an empresarial grant that would allow him to bring 300 Anglo colonists to Texas   (these colonists would later become known as The Old 300)   .[3] Austin was reluctant to join his father's Texas venture, but pressure from Hawkins to help support his father's venture was a key turning point for him.[citation needed] Moses Austin was attacked on his way back to Missouri[3]. Upon returning home Moses became ill with pneumonia and died on June 10, 1821. He left his empresario grant to his son, Stephen.

Austin had boarded the steamer Beaver and departed New Orleans to meet Spanish officials led by Erasmo Seguín. He was at Natchitoches, Louisiana, on June 31, 1821, when he learned of his father's death. "This news has effected me very much, he was one of the most feeling and affectionate Fathers that ever lived. His faults I now say, and always have, were not of the heart."

His party traveled the 300 miles   (480 km) in three weeks to San Antonio with the intent of reauthorizing his father's grant, arriving on August 12. While in transit, they learned that Mexico had declared its independence from Spain, and Texas had become a Mexican province rather than a Spanish territory. In San Antonio, the grant was reauthorized by Governor Antonio María Martínez, who allowed Austin to explore the Gulf Coast between San Antonio and the Brazos River in order to find a suitable location for a colony.[4] As guides for the party, Manuel Becerra, along with three Aranama Indians, went with the expedition.

Austin advertised the opportunity in New Orleans, stating that the land was available along the Brazos and Colorado rivers.[5] A family of a husband, wife and two children would receive 1,280 acres   (520 ha) at twelve and a half cents per acre. Farmers could get 177 acres   (0.72 km2) and ranchers 4,428.In December 1821, the first U.S. colonists crossed into the granted territory by land and sea, on the Brazos River in present day Brazoria County, Texas.

I did not go looking for any disagreement with any Spanish speaking person (or any other non-English speaking group). They came to my home and forced the issue on me. As far as I am concerned, everyone else's rights stop at my curb line. I cannot back up any further than to stay in my own home. My back is against the wall, and the line has been drawn. HERE IS WHERE I MAKE MY STAND.... I am a homeowner, law-abiding, tax paying AMERICAN citizen, who served in the military, so I feel I have earned the right to make reference to the military as it may apply to my opinions.
I believe my statements on this issue have been clear. I fully support all AMERICAN troops. All US Military personal are required to speak ENGLISH.
Legal or Illegal, everyone should speak English in America   (That is and has always been the American language), as I tried to speak Spanish when I was in Mexico. If you disagee, it does not right.....

    Litter, in Spanish

This evening an Avon book in Spanish only was thrown in every yard on my block. Of more than 30 households on my street, perhaps two or three might speak Spanish. Of those, one might be capable of reading Spanish. I intend to contact my City Council members, mayor and the Police Department as to what needs to occur to keep this person or persons from littering our streets. American young men and women are fighting and dying (all speaking English). I find this an insult and would find it so no matter what language other than English such litter was published in.

As for me, and those like me, being "Racist", that is the usual "left wing nut job" response to anyone who dares to ask for the same respect demanded from the "Politically Correct Groups" for non-whites. I thought the same thing at first. But, then I went on my weekly 'Bomber litter pick up', on my block and found that every fourth or fifth Avon book that was thrown in the yards was in Spanish. Regardless, Maria @ 1321 E seminary, ft worth Texas, 76115, is littering   / soliciting   (regardless of postings against SOLICITATION) in White Settlement 'ILLEGALLY'.........   .........

"American young men & women are fighting and dying (all speaking English)",
If you are talking about the war in Iraq, you are mistaken to a point. They may all speak english, but some of them are not even American citizens. Some of them ge their citizenship after they have given the ultimate sacrafice. I don't agree with anyone throwing stuff in my yard, but I find peope like you an insult, trying to drag a fighting men and women into your racist tyraid.

looks like Don can now join Sue on the "HAS BEEN LIST" again. I wonder if Garry wishes he had not won? Well, when you figure all the cars they all got I guess they figure it was a good deal.I wonder how much Baker is worried now? Poor Jimmy   !! with Don not being on the council ,he's not suppose to to be at city hall all day telling Jimmy what to do   . looks like Jimmy will have to learn to do things on his own.

Nope, Jimmy has made his own way with the city. He should be ok if he wants to stay. Mr. Wilson will probably resign within a few month.
